Bank of the West Great Returns Sweepstakes

Redwood City Man Gets the Girl and Wins the Bank of the West Great Returns Sweepstakes

Three years ago Danny Reyes met his future wife while sitting in the stands watching the qualifying rounds of women's professional tennis at the Bank of the West Classic.

Fast forward to July 30, 2011, Reyes - accompanied by his wife, now eight and a half months pregnant - returned to the Classic once again, only this time he was on the court facing one of the world's top female tennis pros: 13-time Grand Slam Champion Serena Williams.

Williams served the ball three times and Reyes was able to return two over the net.

"My legs were like jelly," Reyes said. "I wish I could have risen to the occasion more," he said. "The balls floated and I didn't have the control that I wanted to."

San Francisco Bay Area local Reyes won the return serve opportunity through the Bank of the West Great Returns Sweepstakes on the Bank of the West Facebook page.

"I saw the sweepstakes on Facebook and thought…why not?" said Reyes.

He had no idea that from thousands of entries, his would be picked just weeks later for the chance of a lifetime: a face-off with a tennis pro to return a 100 mph serve. Some of the fastest professional women's tennis serves have been clocked in the 120 mph range.

The next day, Reyes and his wife returned to Stanford's Taube Tennis Stadium and watched as Serena Williams won the Bank of the West Classic 7-5, 6-1 over Marion Bartoli.

"This was the second-best Bank of the West event ever," Reyes said.

The first, of course, was three years ago when he met his wife.

The Bank of the West Classic is the oldest women's-only professional tennis tournament in the world and is the first stop of the US Open Series. A WTA premier event, the Bank of the West Classic features a 28-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw with total prize money of $721,000. Held on Stanford University's campus at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium since 1997, former champions include: Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Andrea Jaeger, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams.
